Hello! This journal is 99% friends only. The 1% that is isn't locked away mostly consists of my reading lists, stories, and the occasional odd entry. However, most of my stories can be found over at nolonger19.

If I haven't lost you yet, and you're curious about who I am, you can look at my info page and interests (which... needs to be updated. *sheepish grin*) If you're curious about what topics I write about in my journal, look at my tags (some of them are obscure, I realize. Sorry?)

If you like what you see, feel free to friend me and leave a comment here. I'll take a look at your journal, and most likely friend you back.

Have a fabulous day! ♥

holy cow, a Milliways post

Milliways is moving to Dreamwidth, with a whole new cast list. I don't think I'll be making the move with them.

The truth is, I can't remember the last time I RPed. It has definitely been quite some time. I have two characters active right now, but when I do RP, I only seem to bring in the one I'm more comfortable with and have RPed with longer.

Where does that leave my characters, including the ones retired?

Characters, old and 'current'Collapse )

Thank you, Milliways, for all the good times. Because of you, I've made several friends that I hope will continue to be my friends even though I'm not RPing anymore. I've learned stuff about myself that I might have never known. I've been places I never would have thought to visit. But most of all, you made me happy, Milliways. I'll never forget you.

I don't normally do these, but with it being cloudy and cooler today, it seems like a good time to jump on the bandwagon.

I have a desire to write things, no matter how crappy they might turn out.

Therefore, I ask for prompts. If I know the fandom, I'll attempt to write it.

Go for it, folks.

Elisabeth Sladen, aka Sarah Jane Smith of Doctor Who and the spin off The Sarah Jane Adventures, passed away. She was 63.

Rest in peace, Liz. You and Sarah Jane will be missed.

(They should dedicate the new episode that airs this Saturday to her. It seems only appropriate.)
Since the book is due today, I need to finally get this rec posted. So here goes!

I can't remember if it was the title, Here Lies Arthur, or the author, Philip Reeve, that caused me to pick up the book, but it was definitely the combination of the two that got me to check it out. That, and this sentence from the summery on the inside of the cover: In the course of their travels, Myrddin transforms Gwyna into the mysterious Lady of the Lake, a boy warrior, and a spy.

Hey look, there's a wikipedia page for the book! It says everything I wanted to say, only much better than I would have been able to, so please excuse me while I copy and paste.

The novel starts with an attack by Arthur and his war-band, and the escape of Gwyna, a servant girl. She is found by Myrddin, a bard who hopes to build Arthur's reputation as a great hero so that he can unite the native British against the Saxons who have occupied the east of the country. Myrddin tells Gwyna to give Arthur Caliburn while pretending to be the Lady of the Lake. When she does that successfully, Myrddin disguises her in boy's clothes so that she can travel with the war-band as his servant.

Throughout her travels, she meets a boy who was brought up as a girl, tricks a holy man, swims in the Roman baths of Aquae Sulis, takes part in a battle, and witnesses Arthur's brutality, piousness and immorality, all the while observing her master create the fantastic stories that have made 'King Arthur' one of the most famous men in legend. After Arthur's death she creates some stories herself, conceding that the legend is more important than the mere facts.

Gwyna/Gwyn: the narrator, a servant girl who spends much of the book disguised as a boy
Myrddin: her master, a Celtic bard, Arthur's adviser
Arthur, nicknamed the Bear: the leader of a Romano-British war-band
Gwenhwyfar: a relative of Ambrosius Aurelianus, later Arthur's wife
Cei: Arthur's half-brother and a friend to Myrddin
Bedwyr: Gwyn's friend, later Gwenhwyfar's lover
Medrawt: Bedwyr's older brother, a warrior
Peredur: son of a famous warrior, raised as a girl by his widowed mother, later Gwyna's lover

[from Wikipidia]

Anyway, one of the things I liked about the book is how it felt real. Magical things are explained off as tricks and stories. The names of people and places are pretty close to what they would have actually been back then. Phillip Reeve says this isn't "a historical novel, and in writing it I did not set out to portray "the real King Arthur," only to add my own little thimbleful to the sea of stories which surrounds him." But it feels like it could be.

Another thing I liked is the importance and power of stories within the book. Why do we think of Arthur, the Once and Future King, King of all Britain, the way we do? Because of stories.

So if you like stories of stories, cross dressing girls, cross dressing boys, Authurian legend, and/or Phillip Reeve, I think you will really like this book. Even if you don't like that stuff, I still highly recommend Here Lies Arthur. You just might change your mind.

Dec. 27th, 2010

I didn't meet any of my resolutions this year. Fail, Carrie, utter fail. I am going to meet them this year. No doubt about it. I just need to use more willpower, and I can do it.

One of them is to lose weight. I've already spent time on the treadmill this morning, and later I'm going to check out the different fitness places in the towns around us. I just need good music to work out to. I already have my 2011 theme song: My Chemical Romance's "Planetary (GO!)". I learned this morning that the beat of the song matches speed 3.7 on the treadmill.

So! What are some songs that really make you want to move? Give me your suggestions!

With Christmas a week away, I thought I'd ask this question:

What deserts do you have around your home during the holiday season?

We always have a huge batch of sugar cookies. Then there are gooey bars, both regular and chocolate variety. Hello dollies, with each yummy layer. We also have pecan tarts, although they haven't been made yet this season. Mmm, pecans.

So! How about you?

Duck: *touchdown arms*

I normally talk about the high school, college or pro levels of football. Today I'm taking another step back, going to middle school.

And yes, this was totally a legal move and the points counted.

browser question

I've been having issues with my laptop (I'm currently on my parents). It's been freezing up a lot. Right now I have it in safe mode while I transfer files that are saved on it to my external hard drive.

I do have a question though: do any of you know of a way to save the bookmarks on a browser into a sort of document? I use Mozilla Firefox, and have a ton of bookmarks marked on there. It would suck if I lost them all.

Help? Please?

I think I figured out what I'm doing for my au_bingo prompt Fantasy & Supernatural: Angels and Demons. *can't help but be totally amused by it*

A very short teaser:

She lifts a delicate eyebrow at him. "Of all the beings they could have sent as a replacement, you are the last I would have expected."

ETA: Up over 700 words! And the minimum is 500 words! This isn't going to be super long, I feel. It -could- be longer, if I wanted it to be. But... I think I'm perfectly happy with a shorter fic. Maybe I'll even get it done tonight!
Title: Not Your Typical Peruvian Folk Band
Fandom: Doctor Who (AU)
Characters/pairings: Amy, Eleven, Rory; Amy/Rory, with past Amy/Eleven and hints of Amy/Eleven/Rory
Rating: PG-13, to be safe
Word count/track count: somewhere between 1k-2k words/16 songs
Spoilers: all of season five, no spoilers about next season.
Disclaimer: Amy and her boys do not belong to me.
Summary: An interview with the up-and-coming band, My Poncho Boys. For the au_bingo prompt "Other: Band".

Author note: This is my first ever fanmix. Meeps? This is also the first time I've ever written these characters. Double meeps? What made it even harder is that since it's an AU fanmix, there has to be some kind of story behind the songs. Why does My Poncho Boys sing these particular songs? So... I tried. If a lot of songs seem like they could be for canon, well, let's just say this universe is only a step over from the canon, hence the similarities. Anyway! Have at it.

Not Your Typical Peruvian Folk Band: A Doctor Who AU ficmixCollapse )
Okay, question time.

How do you define meta? Because, okay, I have an idea for one of my au_bingo prompts, but I think it would work better as a meta than as a fic. The thing is, I don't want to write what I think is meta to then find out that no, it's not meta, it doesn't fall into the criteria.

So... help? What say you?

haven't they told this story before?

Everyone in any sort of fandom should check this out:

Not My Fandom Fest: We all joke about "fannish osmosis," and this comment ficathon is going to put that to the test. The object is to write a ficlet for a fandom you're not a part of based solely on what you've learned from your friends list and fandom at large.

I've contributed a few ficlets. You should too. :D

(My Sherlock one is totally ariastar's fault.)

The first trapped miner in the Chile mine collapse back at the beginning of August has made it to the surface! Hooray!

*thanks God for this and prays that the other 32 miners make it out without any hitches*

ETA: Update before I go to bed: four of the miners have now made it back to the surface.

From onemanga:

"There is an end to everything, to good things as well."

It pains me to announce that this is the last week of manga reading on One Manga (!!). Manga publishers have recently changed their stance on manga scanlations and made it clear that they no longer approve of it. We have decided to abide by their wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site. The removal of content will happen gradually (so you can at least finish some of the outstanding reading you have), but we expect all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July 2010).

So what next? We're not really sure at this point, but we have some ideas we would like to try out. Until then, the One Manga forums will remain active and we encourage all of you to continue using them. OMF has developed into a great community and it would be a shame to see that disappear.

You can also show us some love in this moment of sadness by 'liking' our brand new Facebook page. It would be nice to see just how many of you came to enjoy our 'better than peanut butter and jelly' invention.

Regardless of whether you stay with us or not, on behalf of the One Manga team, I would like to thank you all for your unwavering support over the years. Through the ups and downs you have stuck with us, and that is what kept us going.

As a certain Porky was fond of saying... That's all folks!

Time for me to go lay down and let this all sink in.

- Zabi

I think I'm going to do like them and go lay down. And cry a bit.

(The newest Ouran was just about to come out! And it's so close to the end! Dammit!)

ETA: I just found a blog online where someone is translating the newest chapter! *dances with glee*

*but is still very sad because that doesn't help Naruto and other manga was reading at onemanga*

Last one, I promise. This isn't based off of anyone, it's just a random character I drew. I actually went digging for my school boxes to find my drawing pencils and pen (5H pencil for the original sketch, then traced over with Micron 01 pen). Squares are once again from drawing on the back of calculation paper.
